What is an Income Tax Calculator?

An income tax calculator is an online tool that estimates your Indian income tax liability from your income, deductions and the slab rates applicable to your age and chosen regime. The AGITools24 income tax calculator goes further — it computes both regimes side by side, applies statutory deduction caps, the Section 87A rebate, surcharge with marginal relief and the 4% Health & Education Cess, and shows exactly how each figure was derived.

How is Income Tax Calculated in India?

Old vs New Tax Regime — which should you pick?

There is no universal answer. The New Regime (FY 2025-26 & 2026-27) has lower rates, a ₹12 lakh rebate threshold and a ₹75,000 standard deduction, but removes most deductions. Salaried users with large 80C/80D/HRA claims can still save under the Old Regime. This salary tax calculator shows both totals for your inputs so you can decide with numbers — the estimated difference is always based on the information you enter.

Who can use this tax calculator?

Salaried employees, self-employed professionals and businesses (including presumptive taxation under 44AD/44ADA), investors with capital gains, senior citizens benefiting from higher slabs and 80TTB, and HUFs. Works fully on mobile, in English, with Indian Rupee formatting throughout — free, with no sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an income tax calculator?
An online tool that estimates your tax liability from income, deductions, slab rates, rebate, surcharge and cess for a chosen financial year and regime — instantly, without manual slab math.
How is income tax calculated?
Gross income minus exemptions and deductions gives taxable income. Slab rates are applied, then the 87A rebate, surcharge where applicable, and 4% Health & Education Cess are added to reach the final liability.
What is the difference between Old and New Tax Regime?
Old Regime: higher rates but most deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest). New Regime: lower slabs, ₹75,000 standard deduction, ₹60,000 rebate up to ₹12 lakh — but few deductions. The better option depends on your figures; this calculator shows both.
What is taxable income?
Your gross total income reduced by allowable exemptions and deductions. Slab rates apply to this amount, not to gross income.
What is standard deduction?
A flat deduction from salary income: ₹50,000 under the Old Regime and ₹75,000 under the New Regime for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27.
What is Section 87A rebate?
A rebate for resident individuals: up to ₹60,000 under the New Regime (total income up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above it) and up to ₹12,500 under the Old Regime (total income up to ₹5 lakh). It does not apply to HUFs or non-residents.
What is Health and Education Cess?
A 4% cess levied on your income tax plus surcharge, shown separately in the breakdown.
Can I calculate salary tax?
Yes — enter gross salary in Quick mode or a full breakdown (basic, HRA, rent, allowances, perquisites) in Advanced mode, and both regimes are computed instantly.
Can I download my tax calculation?
Yes — a professional PDF report, CSV data, JSON data, or a clean printed report. Everything is generated locally in your browser.
Is this calculator an official government tax calculator?
No. AGITools24 is an independent estimation tool and is not the official Income Tax Department calculator.
